February 1st is the feast of St Brigid. 




Legend has it she made the cross from rushes she found on the ground beside a dying man in order to convert him. This Winter is unseasonably mild, ideal birding weather.  So myself and hubbie are venturing off with Dublin South Branch of Birdwatch Ireland  (BWI) in the morning to Cabinteely Park.

The hope is that we'll spot a 'Great Spotted Woodpecker' or two.  Already this year a number have been spotted so I'll let you know how we get on....

Given that I'm from Cork I couldn't let this day go by without mentioning Nollaig na mBan as Little Christmas is also called Womens' Christmas (Nollaig na mBan) and sometimes even known as Women's Little Christmas in Cork and is still to this day a big celebration around Munster.

Squirrels don’t intentionally dig up newly planted bulbs, but that’s how it seems. Your bulbs gets moved up to the surface as the squirrel buries it’s feast. Protect pots and new plantings with a cover of small mesh chicken wire now. Remove it when new growth is poking through the soil in spring. 



Watch out for mice, if cold enough they may unearth your bulbs for a snack.

I've been fortunate to see mature specimens of this beauty over the years. A native of California this evergreen plant Garrya elliptica has "tassels" that resemble icicles. This handsome evergreen is very adaptable to the home garden and too little planted. In Winter I often have people asking "what's that with the 'long drippy' flowers on it?"

Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple'



One of my favourite deciduous shrubs for suburban gardens only [which I shall explain later] is Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple'.  

It will easily grow 5m high by 5m wide [15' x 15' approx] at a medium rate. Many websites (US in origin) mention that this beauty is hardy to Zone 5. ...I pot it on, it grows, I water it, it wilts, I use it in cooking, leaves are yellow and appear infected, I change it's position, I keep it outdoors, it dries out.....and so on

Bamboos have been given a bad reputation over the years because of the invasive nature of some species, but many have a tight-clumping habit and deserve a place in our gardens.  

Bamboo shoots or bamboo sprouts are the edible shoots. They are used in numerous Asian dishes and broths. They are sold in various processed shapes and available in fresh, dried, and canned versions.

Mature trees usually already have their shape determined, so it's really up to the gardener to maintain that shape and size. 

Each year you should do the following:
Remove Dead / Diseased / Damaged branches
Remove Crossing branches and Weak stems
Remove any branches growing towards the centre of tree
Remove any growing vertically or straight down

Arthur Bower's Hydroleca is a lightweight clay aggregate formed by special clay minerals expanded at a high temperature. I adore Taxus baccata (Yew) especially as a hedge. It is native to Europe, North Africa and from Turkey to the Himalayas. Many of the largest wild plants from the Black Sea area were harvested for timber in the 19th century. The approximately 185 named cultivars show a wide range of growth habits and leaf colour and size.
